Industry Update from EFX President Brian Andrews

Have you heard about all the recent controversy surrounding Geranium oil or, more specifically called 1,3-dimethylamylamine, Methylhexaneamine or even 1,3 DMAA?

You see, some recent news stories have revealed some very interesting facts about this compound. First and foremost, the newest research now shows that Geranium Oil, in and of itself, does NOT actually contain this compound!

What does this mean? In short, whoever is actually manufacturing this stuff is adding it to the mix. Or, as we say, they are "spiking" it.

So what does all this now mean? Well, as you already know, it was the one compound we decided many months ago NOT to add to our K-OTIC pre-workout formula.

And that was for two major reasons...

  1. We tried MANY formulas with this compound in it. And I can tell you none of us liked either the effects or after-effects. To us training is about hardcore intensity and focus. It's not the time or place to catch a buzz.
  2. We knew from the beginning that this stuff would be banned. The question was not IF it would actually get banned... but rather WHEN. I've been in this industry long enough to know that pretty much anything of this nature won't last long. So at that point it's a decision of whether or not to jump in and do a 'cash grab' with this material as quickly as possible while the "getting is good". Or hold your ground and build a product we believe is far superior anyway. We chose door #2.

I personally know of a few competing companies that decided they had no choice but to take Option #1. These companies are run by people I have a great deal of respect for (no, I will not name names), so I'm honestly disappointed they didn't stick it out and wound up going in favor of the almighty dollar instead. Oh well, such is life...

Side Note:

High level athletes should be aware that 1,3-dimethylamylamine is currently banned in competition... but not out of competition. If that's you, and you currently use this stuff, please do yourself a HUGE favor and check with your league to make sure you won't get popped if you're subject to random testing.

Oh, one more thing...

As always, DON'T just take my word for it. Instead, check out these two links for yourself.

  • Read this article published a couple months ago that gives a great overview of this situation.
  • Listen to this short (audio) interview with an industry expert who explains some recent findings.

Perhaps the most important point here is that, like this expert alludes to, unless we all take a stand and clean up our industry, the government WILL step in at some point and do it for us. And that'll be a crying shame! After all, do you really wanna' end up paying $200 a month for your "prescription" of creatine or protein powder?! I didn't think so... and... don't fool yourself into thinking it can't happen!

Finally, let me also beef up my case with this little tidbit. 1,3-dimethylamylamine has now officially been banned in Canada. Products containing it there are in the process of being pulled from store shelves. So how long do you think it'll be until the U.S. does the same?

My bet is that it'll be much sooner than you think...

All The Best,

Brian Andrews
