Jen Aragon :: NPC Bikini Competitor

You guys and gals ready for another Fabulously Fit Female? Well I have one for you whose transformation from flab to “FAB” is nothing short of extraordinary! I am very excited to share her story with you, so without further ado let me introduce you to 27-year-old, Jen Aragon!

R: Jen, please give my readers a little basic info about yourself just to get things started.

J: I would be happy to! Hi! My name is Jen Aragon. I'm 27 years old and I'm Hawaiian, Filipino, Chinese and Spanish. I live in Fullerton, California with my husband of six years, Brent, and my beautiful son, Taj Keoni! I work as a hair dresser and a Children’s Director.

R: Your transformation pics are incredible! Please share with us how you did it. How long did it take from beginning to end? What made you make the major lifestyle change?

J: Thank You! My complete transition took about three full years. Of course, however, I'm always working on making improvements! I want to be healthy enough to enjoy life with my son and one day, my grandchildren!

Everything started after I delivered my son and added even more pounds to the baby weight I had gained during the pregnancy. At my first doctor’s checkup after the delivery, I stepped on the scale and watched the numbers stop at 200 lbs. I was speechless and couldn't believe I let myself put that much weight on! However, the desire to lose weight came when I thought I was going to have a heart attack and black out walking up the stairs in my home! At this point I said to myself, "Enough is enough!" The very next morning I was out jogging. Jogging then turned to running and running turned into all-out sprints. Fifteen minute jogs turned into five mile runs. This of course happened over time and about a year later I had lost a significant amount of weight! However, I knew I needed to tone up a bit. I asked a great friend of mine, bodybuilding competitor, Matt Mendrun, to teach me some simple but effective “weight workouts,” as I used called them (LOL)! I hated the gym! It was smelly, intimidating and I was embarrassed to do my workouts in front of people. So instead, I went to the store and bought some weights, beginning my real transition in my own living room! It did not take me long to get hooked! A couple months later a gym opened three minutes from my house and my husband encouraged me to get a membership. So I did, and it was the best decision I could have made! Working out there and meeting new people made me push myself harder, set new goals and dominate them!

R: What do you find are your biggest struggles when it comes to building and maintaining your physique? How do you overcome them?

J: My name is Jen Aragon and I'm addicted to food (LOL)! Yes it is really true – I am addicted to food! It's a constant struggle. Most people like specific foods but unfortunately, I'm not picky and I love it all! Sweet and salty foods are my biggest downfall. I enjoy anything and everything from double bacon avocado cheeseburgers to pizza to chocolate to cheesecake and more! Slowly I've learned to control the anger, stress and anxiety I feel while dieting, but it was extremely hard in the beginning. I feel that the first month of eating totally clean I went through an actual withdrawal or detoxification process. I'm thankful for my husband and my son who were supportive and patient even when I went a little crazy (LOL)! I'm definitely an emotional eater so this is why I'm always prepared with clean meals and snacks in my purse. Also, sugar free gum is “heaven sent” when I am craving candy! When I feel like I'm going to “lose it” I literally stop what I'm doing and say to myself, “Junk food is poison for my body! I control me! Food doesn't control me! I'm stronger than a craving. I must be an example!"

For me, the goal to staying on track with a clean diet is the following:

  1. Be Prepared! Always keep food and/or snacks with you so you’re not tempted to eat something that will affect your body negatively.
  2. Be Organized! Take the time to plan and cook your meals for the week. It may seem overwhelming at first, but once it becomes a habit, it becomes second nature!

R: I know you are a high level, drug free NPC Bikini competitor. What made you decide to compete, and what are your ultimate goals in this industry?

J: Matt had been trying to get me to compete for months but I always said "NO WAY! It's not for me!" Although I thought I had gotten in pretty good shape I never thought I could get lean and proportioned enough to compete. More and more people at the gym kept asking me if I was training for a show, so I started tossing around the idea, but was still extremely insecure. One day I met IFBB Figure pro, MaryJo Cooke-Elliott, and she was so sweet, amazing and informative! We talked for hours, and after I was pumped and ready to compete! Brent was 100% supportive, so as of February 1st I was dieting and training for my first show! Less than two months later, on March 19, 2011, I stepped on stage at a competition in San Diego, California! For me, this solidified my hard work…my sweat…my tears…my sacrifice. This solidified my transition! I DID IT!

Right now, I compete for fun and to give me a goal to work towards. I would like to earn my pro card but it's not high on my priority list. I would love to break into fitness modeling, as I'm sure every girl in this industry would, but really I compete to show people it's not impossible to reach your goals and have fun with it! I also want to show moms everywhere that it's ok to have a hobby besides your kids. You can still be the “soccer mom,” - you'll just be the “super sexy soccer mom!”

R: What will be your next competition?

J: My next show will be NPC Excalibur, which is on December 3rd in Culver City. I'm excited to get back on the stage and show my improvements!

R: Tell us briefly what training and diet regime you follow in order to stay in shape.

J: This is a brief outline of what my program looks like…

  • Cardio: Six days per week for 45-60 minutes.
  • Legs: Twice per week. I definitely hit glutes hard on both days because I have a flat booty that I'm trying to round out! My favorite leg exercises include dead lifts, curtsy squats and cable kick backs. And I have a love/hate relationship with lunges!
  • Upper Body: I build muscle extremely fast and bulk up easy. I've created a small circuit that I do for my shoulders, bis and tris. It keeps me muscular, toned and lean. For my back and chest I only do pull-ups and pushups because I bulk extremely fast in these areas as well. Some of my favorite upper body workouts include dips and rope pull downs, incline curls and easy bar curls, military press and clickers! Fun! Fun! Fun! I love working upper body!
  • Abs: I try to work them in about three times a week but it's so boring!

R: What motivates and inspires you the most? If you could tell the readers one thing that could help change their mind set and motivate them to make the life change for good what would that be?.

J: My son motivates me the most. I want to be fit and energetic enough to keep up with him for the rest of my life. I want to be able surf, skateboard, run, hike, rock-climb and do anything else he wants to do. I want to enjoy life with him and I want to be healthy enough to do it! It's our responsibility to be an example to future generations. It's not about size or weight, but rather it’s about healthy living, healthy thinking and self-appreciation. The choices you make today affect your future and ultimately, the people around you. Make the choice to live long and strong! Enjoy every bit of your life! Spend time with family and help others in every way possible! After all, isn't that what life is all about?

R: What products from All American EFX have you tried and implemented into your program? How have they helped?

J: I absolutely love K-OTIC! It's simply a great pre-workout! I have a hard time keeping my energy levels up on my leg days and this gives me the energy boost I need to kill it from the beginning of my leg workout till the very end! Grape is my favorite flavor - tastes like punch! YUM! The Nytric EFX Pro is also amazing! The increased performance and energy levels are always needed especially when you have a 3-year-old!

I've heard great things about the Kre-a-Fem and I can't wait to try it! I'll actually be ordering it this week!

R: Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us your journey. You look incredible and I can't wait to share your inspiring, life changing journey with others who feel stuck, or that they could never do what you have done!

J: Thank you so much for this opportunity to share my trials and triumphs! I'm truly so honored! Remember to enjoy the process! Accept the pain, make it your friend! You are stronger than you think!
